The island of Cyprus is located in the Mediterranean, just 60kms or so, off the
Southern coast of Turkey, the island's position has meant that
historically Cyprus has been the meeting place of East and West. Cyprus is a very historical place, infact there has been settlements here for nearly 10,000 and the island is dotted with ancient ruins of cities and civilizations from years gone by. All of the island offers beautiful scenery with traditional villages, churches and mosques scattered across the mountains waiting to be discovered.
In 1974 the island was suddenly divided when the Turkish invaded and as such the North is now home to the Turkish Cypriot population. The locals speak Turkish and use the Turkish Lira as their currency. There are still traces of the British past where many people speak good English and they still drive on the left hand side of the road. Holidays in Northern Cyprus are becoming very popular thanks to the laid back way of life and the warm welcome tourists receive from the locals.
The capital of both sides of the island is Nicosia (Lefkosa in Turkish) has a great market and it remains the last divided city in the world. The UN buffer zone passes right through the city dividing it for the Greek Cypriots to the south and the Turkish Cypriots to the north. From 1974 the crossing of the buffer zone was very limited, however in 2003 the rules were relaxed meaning more crossings were relaxed.
