Just next to the modern half of town is the fantastic old town, a fortress city built by the Knights of St. John and very well preserved. The cobbled streets of the old town have a good range of boutiques, souvenir shops and greek style tavernas.
Rhodes Town harbour was once the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, nowadays it is a thriving port complete with cruise ships, luxury yachts and ferry services to nearby Kos. Rhodes Town is a great base from which to explore the island, there is an excellent bus service, many boat trips to resorts including Faliraki and Lindos or a good road network for hire cars. There is also a small beach, for better beach options Ixia is just two miles away.
