Montenegro may not be the first place you would think of when choosing your next holiday, but it should be! This former Yugoslavian state has stunning scenery, lakes dotted with pretty islands, green mountains and a lovely coastline on the Adriatic sea. It is often said that just when you cannot find a more stunning setting in Montenegro, your next port of call is more stunning than the last!
Montenegro is on the Adriatic and has a small border with Croatia to the north, as well as a longer border with Bosnia & Herzegovina to the north west, Serbia to the west and Albania in the south. The port of Bar is on the coastline along with the popular resorts of Becici, Budva, Petrovac and Przno. Kolasin is set inland and is a popular base for a lakes and mountains holiday.
The coast of Montenegro incorporates some lovely beaches, some sandy some pebbles. There are many hidden coves as well as fine sandy beaches, the best and most popular sandy beaches are in the region of Budva and Milocer, the latter being the home of the stunning Queens Beach. Petrovac has a number of bays that offer beaches which are a mix of pebbles and coarse sand.
Entertainment is rather relaxed in Montenegro, in the larger towns and resorts restaurants close around midnight but bars stay open late into the early hours. During the summer many towns and villages hold festivals and folklore shows that are a great way to experience Montenegro lifestyle. Shopping in Montenegro is usually based around craft and gift shops, popular goods include lace, leather, hand crafted souvenirs and embroidered linens.
Meat kebabs, stuffed cabbage or vine leaves and charcoal grilled minced meat gives a real Greek feel to the local dishes. However there is also a strong Italian influence and pizza and pasta is widely available. Sea food is as ever popular in Montenegro with mussels, crab, lobster and prawns as well as the catch of the day such as red mullet or sea bream always available on local restaurants menus. Turkish delight is also a popular sweet as it is with other countries in the area.
If you are looking to see more of Montenegro there is a good coach network that connects most towns and cities and they are very efficent. Car hire is a popular way to explore but be aware that many of the local roads are in poor condition so travelling at night can be difficult.
