The
Riviera Maya is located on the Yucatan Peninsula within the state of Quintana
Roo in Mexico. A low tropical jungle covers the land of the Riviera Maya,
leading out to white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters along the long
stretch of coast. Also known as the Mayan Riviera, the Riviera Maya runs along
the Caribbean coastline of Mexico sweeping along the side of the peninsula. The
district encompasses the resorts of Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun and Felipe Carrillo
Puerto. Holidays in Riviera Maya are associated with luxury all-inclusive hotel
resorts, boutique hotels and high-end villa rentals spread along the beautiful Mexican
coast. The Riviera Maya area is also becoming a popular destination for yacht
charter companies, with American tourists in particular taking advantage of their
close proximity to the stunning location.
One of the main attractions of the Riviera Maya is the Belize Barrier Reef, which starts at Cancun and continues south to Guatemala. Snorkelling and diving is available on the reef with a host of other water sport activities available at most of the beaches. Another key feature of the beautiful Riviera Maya's area of Mexico is the archaeological sites and eco parks. Amongst the most famous are Tulum, Chichen Itza with its strong links to Maya culture, and Coba.
Riviera Maya holidays are perfect for those who enjoy luxury destination holidays, as there are a great number of luxury facilities and fine dining restaurants along the resort and beach areas. Cabanas on the beachside are perfect for pre or post dinner cocktails, and there is a great choice of restaurants making Riviera Maya a firm favourite with lovers of fine food and drink. Authentic Mexican food is available throughout the region with an array of mouth-watering dishes to be sampled during a holiday here. Back from the high-end resorts of the coastline there are many Mexican villages to be explored where you will find handcrafted gifts and souvenirs from the brightly coloured pottery, leather goods and unique jewellery to specialist wood work items. There is certainly plenty to see and do in this peaceful beach location in Mexico.
