Where to go this winter

As the summer comes to an end many people start to think about the cold, dark, damp winter nights and feel like getting away from it all, but where should they go for some winter sun? We have some ideas of where you should head for no matter what your looking for this winter holiday, whether you want a short, medium or long flight we are sure you can find some inspiration for your next winter holiday.

The Algarve, Benidorm, Costa Del Sol and Majorca have been popular for many years for winter sun, all three areas are close to the UK with average flights less than three hours from the UK. Majorca holidays in winter are usually a lot quieter than the summer months and tend to be in the major resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova. Temperatures range from around 12c to 16c from November to March and whilst fairly mild it's not really sunbathing weather! Benidorm temperatures average between 15c to 17c in the winter and is a very sheltered from the wind giving an almost micro climate effect. Benidorm winter holidays have plenty of activities, most of the popular bars are open year round and you will not have to venture far to find a cabaret or a game of bingo! The Algarve and Costa Del Sol are usually the warmest areas and a good bet for catching a winter tan, the temperatures can reach a very pleasent 20c during winter and many of the major resorts are open year round making them a good choice for a holiday in winter months.

The Canary Islands have been a mainstay in winter holiday brochures for many years, with an average flight time of around four hours from the UK many people head here for some winter sun. The main islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are served by many UK airports during the winter holiday season and offer a great destination for year round sunshine. The average temperature in the winter for the Canaries are around 21c. The Canaries are year round destinations which usually mean most activities and attractions remain open as well as bars, restaurants and shops. Madeira which is just north of the Canaries and around three and a half hours flight from the UK is also a good choice with winter temperatures around 20c. Southern Turkey and Cyprus at around five hours flying time can offer mild winters too with average temperatures around 15c to 18c.

For those looking for pretty much guaranteed sunbathing weather then there are a few good options within a six hour flight from the UK. The Red Sea in Egypt is fast becoming a popular destination, resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, Makadi Bay, Hurghada and Marsa Alam average around 23c in the winter and have a wealth of shops, bars, restaurants and excursions to keep you busy during your winter holidays. The Cape Verde Islands are also making a mark on many people's "to visit" list with direct flights to both Sal and Boa Vista now available they are becoming popular year round destinations, there are plenty of islands to explore - ten infact! Winter temperatures can reach as high as 27C in the Cape Verde Islands making it a great choice for a winter holiday. The Gambia has long been a popular choice for a winter break thanks to the excellent winter weather and the warm welcome you receive from the English speaking locals. It rarely drops below 30c, it can reach as high as 40c and it is only a six hour flight from the UK, with flights from five UK airports making The Gambia more accessible than ever!

The best time to visit the Caribbean is during the winter holiday season. The temperatures average around 28c and the tropical hurricane season is usually finished so you can expect hot days with very little rain. Holidays in the Caribbean offer something for everyone from upmarket luxury to no frills room only hotels. Many islands offer different resorts that range from getaway from it all to lively nightlife. One thing guaranteed is a beautiful beach with the crystal clear Caribbean sea lapping the shores! Mexico is another popular winter sun destination with the Cancun and Rivieria Maya area hitting an average of 30C during the winter months. There are lots of excursions on offer and there is a fantastic range of hotels to suit all budgets. Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean average around ten hours. Another popular destination for winter holidays is the Indian Ocean. Kenya offers a fantastic holiday destination, you can lie on the beach enjoying the African sunshine or you can head into the bush and experience the wonderful array of wildlife on offer with a safari. Goa holidays offer fantastic value for money and offer an average of 32c during the winter with virtually no rain, there are a number of resorts that offer fantastic food, great beaches great weather and wonderful local people. The tropical paradise of The Maldives avearges 30c during the winter and offers an unforgettable away from it all experience.
